Team usa heads to malaysia for world kung fu championships

The united states kuoshu (kung fu) team will compete at the world kuoshu (kung fu) championships in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia october 15th-18th.

This summer while the world’s eyes were on london and the 2012 olympics, several bay athletes stayed home battling for a coveted spot on the united states national kuoshu (kung fu) team and the opportunity to represent the u.s. at the world kuoshu (kung fu) championships in malaysia later this month.

When all was said and done, the u.s.a team was selected and bay area athletes dominated the competition. Of the 14 total spots on the team, 8 went to students from Richard lee’s east west kung fu in alamo. Collin Lee (danville), Ryan Hodge (pleasanton), Angie Dominguez (pleasanton), Anna Liu (danville), Kaylee Baker (livermore), Eric Stamm (orinda),Whitney Berch (walnut creek) and Ashley Dong (san jose) will fight for gold in the lei tai, or full contact fighting division. Richard Lee’s east west also secured two of the coaching spots as well, when master John Buckley (danville) and Morgan Newman (danville) were selected as head usa national team coach and head usa national women’s team coach respectively.

Held every three to four years in a major city around the world, the world kuoshu (kung fu) championships is a world-class olympic level martial arts tournament. This year the world tournament will be held at the genting mountain resort, outside of Kuala Lampur, Malaysia. The best martial artists from around the globe will compete in forms, weapons, two man sets and full contact lei tai fighting. A first place team award is presented to the country with the most gold medals. The u.s. has won the grand championship at the last two world tournaments which were held in Singapore (2006) and Germany (2009). the students at east west kung fu are ready to bring home another gold medal for their school and country.
