Collin Lee began his martial arts training when he was only 3 1/2 years old. In 2003, he became the youngest student ever to earn a Bok Fu Do black belt at thirteen years old. Mr. Lee has been a disciple under Grandmaster Richard Lee since 2005.

Mr. Collin Lee’s competition experience is extensive. He competed in his first tournament at four years old and has been going strong ever since. He has traveled the world competing and has amassed a collection of gold medals too many to count. At the International Kuo Shu Championships in Baltimore, MD, Collin set a school record by competing and medaling in sixteen divisions in 2002, 2003 and 2004. His efforts were a major factor in Richard Lee’s West Coast Team winning the Wang Chueh Jen Cup for overall team Grand Champion. Even today, Grandmaster Lee and Master Buckley often banter that Collin would have placed second in the tournament those years all by himself.

Says Master Buckley, “I’ve worked with Collin since he was three and half and he’s always been a great kid. For all those kids that want to be like Collin his secret to success is simple – he listened to what I and the other teachers told him and he did exactly that. He’s the most respectful, conscientious, hard working kid I’ve ever worked with. And the results of those traits speak for themselves.”

In 2003, Collin won Most Outstanding Youth Competitor at the 1st TWKSF World Kuo Shu Tournament. In 2005, Collin was named Youth Competitor of the Year by Inside Kung Fu magazine. He has won the USKSF Youth Competitor of the Year four times (2002-2005). Collin was an Olympic hopeful for the 2008 games in Beijing, China where it was planned to introduce Chinese martial arts (modern Wushu) for the first time. Unfortunately, it did not come to pass as the International Olympic Committee postponed consideration of modern Wushu’s inclusion to a future date.

In 2009, Collin qualified for the United States Lei Tai team, earning his first national championship fighting full contact. He went on to represent the United States at the 3rd TWKSF World Kuo Shu Championships in Germany later that same year and took home a silver medal. At the same event, Collin won gold in the open hand form division as well as both long and short weapon divisions. In 2012, Collin qualified for the United States Lei Tai team to earn his second national championship. Only months later, he realized his dream of becoming the World Champion by taking first in his weigh class at the 4th TWKSF World Kuo Shu Tournament in Malaysia. He then went on to qualify for the USA National Team for a third time in 2015. He defended his world championship title and became a two time world champion at the 5th TWKSF Kuo Shu Tournament in Argentina, 2015.

Mr. Collin Lee is the school manager for our East West Lafayette. He is a role model to the younger generation of Bok-Fu-Do students. He is an exemplary example to the Bok Fu Do youth because of his hard work, dedication, humility and respect for his teachers and his art.

“Starting at East West at 3 ½ years of age means I had a very unique life in that the school was literally a second home and my teachers and the other students were my second family. My personal instructor, Master Buckley, was not simply a teacher or coach, but a role model and third parent for me. Additionally, the other students I have met here over the years have become lifelong friends and companions whom I will cherish and love forever. When I was younger, I simply thought that I was extremely lucky and blessed to have found a place where there is such a high concentration of amazing people of equally incredible personalities and attitudes. While I still believe I am blessed to have found such an amazing place to have spent the vast majority of my life at, I realized that it is no simple coincidence that East West is comprised of the greatest teachers, students, families, and friends; East West encourages each and every person who walks in through that door to bring out the best in themselves and those around them.

I could talk about how training at East West has developed my body in ways that I could never have imagined; how it has made me faster and stronger than I could have ever wished for; or how it has given me the confidence, self-esteem, and wisdom to pursue goals outside of my comfort zone that no other sport could. I could also expound for hours on how my training at East West has allowed me to experience new feelings that most individuals would never have the privilege of experiencing, be that competing on a world stage or watching your own personal student achieve a new rank within the system. The fact is, East West is every one of these things. But most importantly, East West has been there for me as the model of what I want in my life. From a young toddler, through the tumultuous teen years, and now into young adulthood, East West has been there to guide me through my personal character development, as they are there to guide me through my martial arts journey. As East West has been the prime influencing factor in the young man I have become, I hope that I too can be a model for a newer, younger generation of East West kids.”
