Afternoon Snacking

Great job on your food logs this past week. In going over them, one consistent theme for many of you is the lack of balance in your afternoon snacks. Remember that just a piece of fruit is mainly carbs, so balancing it with a hard boiled egg and/or some almonds would be a good idea. Here are some healthy, easy afternoon snack ideas for you. Afternoon and Evening Snack Ideas

Applesauce & Low Fat Cheese: 1/3 cup applesauce, 1 oz. low fat cheese

Low Fat Yogurt & Nuts: 1/2 cup plain low fat yogurt, 1 teaspoon slivered almonds or 1 macadamia nut

Ham & Fruit: 4 slices 97% fat-free deli ham, 1/2 apple, 3 almonds

Low Fat Cottage Cheese & Tomato: 1/4 cup low fat cottage cheese, 2 tomatoes, sliced, 1 tablespoon guacamole

Hot Dog: 1 soy hot dog, 1 6 inch tortilla, 1 teaspoon mayonnaise or 1 tablespoon guacamole

Chips & Salsa: 1/2 oz. baked tortilla chips, 1 tablespoon salsa, 1 oz. low fat cheese, 1 tablespoon guacamole

Chef Salad: 1 oz. sliced turkey or ham, 1 tossed garden salad, 1/3 teaspoon olive oil and 2/3 teaspoon balsamic vinegar dressing for the salad

Deviled Eggs: 2 hard boiled eggs, 1/4 cup hummus, Slice eggs, discard yolks and fill with 1 tablespoon hummus

Mini Pita Pizza: 1/2 mini pita pockets topped with:1 tablespoon tomato sauce, 1/2 teaspoon olive oil, 1 oz. part-skim mozzarella
