HOME OF BOK FU DO - SYSTEM OF THE WHITE TIGER - EST. 1967
This is an excerpt that was taken from a letter written by grand-master Lee to one of his students that was approaching his Black Belt. Enjoy!
“By understanding the simple, we can understand the complex. We increase our understanding of any subject by progressing from the simple to the complex. When we divide the complex into simple parts, and master them, no project is too difficult. The key to mastery is simplicity.
You know how solutions all seem simple – after you have arrived at them. But they’re simple only when you know already what they are. It is your work in becoming a black belt, to clear away the mass of encumbering material of thought, so that you may bring into plain view the precious thing at the center of the mass. The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak. Got it?
Our system, is simplicity, consistency and repetition or sophisticated simplicity. Life is really simple, but men insist on making it complicated. We struggle with the complexities and avoid the simplicity. see it big, and keep it simple.
Remember this always, the wisest black belt master keeps something of the vision of a child. Though he may think a thousand things that a child could not understand, he is always a beginner, close to the original meaning of life. a Really great man is he that does not lose his child’s-heart.
To me, success means doing the best we can with what we have. Success is in the doing, not in the getting – in the trying, not the triumph. Success is a personal standard – reaching for the highest that is in us – becoming all that we can be. if we do our best, we are a success, and you’re a success to me. But just wait.”
